The Atlantic Ocean off Ocean City, Maryland's inlet, is known for exceptional white marlin fishing and draws some of the best saltwater sport fishermen in the world to compete in two tournaments held annually in August.
The White Marlin Open, based in Ocean City's Sunset Marina, is the world's largest billfish tournament with about 400 boats competing this year beginning Sunday Aug. 5th at 8:30AM and continues daily through Aug. 9th, 8:30AM to 3:30PM with weigh-in from 4:00PM to 9:15PM. The Awards Ceremony will be held on Aug. 10th at 4PM. Last year, two records were set with the $2.58 million payout being the most ever awarded for the catch of a billfish, and the $5.45 million dollar purse was the most ever paid in any fishing tournament, according to event organizers!
The Mid Atlantic 500 (MA500) with a purse of $500,000, has been around since 1992 and is out of Cape May, NJ and Ocean City, MD inlets and held from Aug. 19–23, 2019.
Local Maryland yacht builder, Titan Custom Yachts, will be represented with two 62 ft. Convertible Sportfish models, the 64' Titan Sportfish 2004 "Trust Me Too" that had 3 whites last year in the White Marlin Open, will enter both tournaments captained by New Jersey Yacht Broker Steve Castellini, who is eager to win big this year! "We have a major advantage with the Titan 62 with her lighter weight of 76,000 lbs. and sharper bow entry, the Titan 62 slices through seas to get to where the fish are, with less fuel burn, only 100 gph at cruise speed! The Titan's design and build deliver an incomparable quality of ride. And when it's time to relax, her luxurious interior will make you forget you're on a serious fishing machine!"
The second 62 footer is a new 2019 Titan 62 Sportfish Convertible that will compete in the Mid-Atlantic 500 tournament. The 2019 Titan 62 will be sitting out the White Marlin Open to have the Furuno 360◦ sonar system installed. This system will be able to locate fish 360 degrees around the boat and for a vast distance estimated at three quarters of a mile out!
The 2004 Titan 62 is equipped with Furuno's TZ Touch digital radar with bird finding mode and chirp transducer for fish finding. It links to the Internet via SAT Internet for obtaining further critical data like sea surface temperature, weather and chlorophyll (water clarity) in real time. This is just an indication of the thoughtful electronics array at the Titan helms. But if you happen to miss the mark, no worries—on the Titan, you can easily pick up and move to where you need to be running from edge to edge of tournament waters, quickly and safely!
